Voyager and Galileo Europa Images – Illumination differences on Europa (Galileo)

Illumination differences on Europa (Galileo)
This blinking animation shows a low-contrast mosaic from Galileo's G1 orbit compared to a more contrasty mosaic created using images from Galileo's E14 orbit. These images are in simple cylindrical projection. The images were obtained when the illumination geometry was very similar but the viewing geometry was not. Notice the big changes in contrast. Some of the narrow lines appear darker than the surrounding terrain in one image, whereas in the other image they appear slightly brighter.

G1 and E14 viewing geometry

The viewing geometry when the G1 and E14 images were obtained. The illumination geometry was almost identical whereas the viewing geometry was different.
